At 2500 feet above sea level under a cool and shaded forest canopy, the Makawao Forest Reserve offers one of the best places to mountain bike on Maui. Offering a foot path as well as a variety of trails to suit most skill levels, if you're looking for a break from beach life, a Maui mountain biking adventure might be just what you need.

Directions from Kahului:
From the Hana Highway (Highway 36), turn right onto the Haleakalā Highway (Highway 37) and turn left on Makawao Avenue (State Highway 400). Just past Saint Theresa's Catholic Church, make a right onto Piiholo Road. After about a mile and a half, you will come to a Y-intersection; take the left fork onto Waiahiwi Road. After about a quarter mile, take a forced right onto Kahakapao Road, which you will follow for another mile and a half to the top. Pass through the gate and drive until you reach a parking lot on your right.
